Birdcages are the treasure of Kala village
The Miao people believe that birds are important for harvests (丰收). They have respected (敬重) birds since ancient times. That’s why people see beautiful birdcages (鸟笼) hanging in front of many houses in the Miao villages.
苗族人认为鸟对丰收很重要。他们自古以来就尊重鸟类。这就是为什么人们看到美丽的鸟笼挂在苗寨的许多房子前面。
Kala village in Danzhai County of Guizhou province is famous for its cage-weaving craft (编笼工艺), which dates back over 400 years. In 2009, it was listed as a provincial intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) of Guizhou.
贵州省丹寨的卡拉村以其400多年历史的编笼工艺而闻名。2009年编笼工艺被列为贵州省级非物质文化遗产。
Master’s story
Wang Qiu is an inheritor (传承人) of the Kala birdcage-making craft. She has learned and developed the craft for 18 years since she married her husband in Kala village in 2005. Her teacher is Wang Yuhe, a provincial inheritor of the skill, and also her husband’s father.
王秋是卡拉鸟笼制作工艺的传承人。自从2005年和丈夫在卡拉村结婚以来，她已经学习发展这门手艺18个年头。她的老师是王玉和，是该技艺的省级传承人，也是她丈夫的父亲。
“The Kala birdcage is famous for its [strength],” explained Wang. “Each cage is carefully made from the [strong] moso bamboo (楠竹) and the flexible water bamboo (柔韧的水竹), providing hardness and resilience (韧性). Together, they give birth to a strong cage.
“卡拉鸟笼以其[力量]而闻名，”王玉和解释说。“每个笼子都由结实的楠竹和柔韧的水竹精心制作而成，具有硬度和韧性。这样就制作出了一个坚固的笼子。
As a member of a younger generation, Wang wanted to try something new. She designs and makes everyday products, from bookshelves (书架) to earrings in the shape of Kala birdcages.
作为年轻一代的一员，王秋想尝试一些新的东西。她设计和制作了很多日常用品，书架、卡拉鸟笼形状的耳环等。
To show Kala birdcages to more people, Wang has been sharing videos of her skills on social media. “I hope that my videos can attract more people to learn about the amazing Kala cage-weaving skill. In this way, people will know more about the Miao people and their [great] culture,” Wang said.
为了向更多人展示卡拉鸟笼，王秋在社交媒体上分享了她的视频。“我希望我的视频可以吸引更多的人了解神奇的卡拉编笼技术。通过这种方式，人们将更多地了解苗族和他们的文化，”王秋说。
